Trail Boss

At this year’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, General Motors (GM) unveiled their new, fully-redesigned-from-the-ground-up Silverado pickup. Even though GM had several variants of the new pickup on display, the show stopper was the new off-road oriented Trailboss trim.

Apart from the new and unique styling, the Trailboss sports a factory two-inch lift, locking rear differential, skid plates, off-road valved Rancho shocks, 18-inch wheels and 275/65R18 Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires. While GM admits it’s no Raptor, they are hoping that people understand it makes more sense to opt for a more sensible truck than the mental options that are available on the market right now.

Power plant options will be revised versions of the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines, and the all-new, much anticipated 3.0L Duramax inline-six diesel engine. All three engine options will be paired with the new 10-speed automatic transmission that General Motors developed in partnership with Ford.

Other revisions prove promising like forged upper control arms, revised leaf spring designs for longer travel in the suspension, and use of aluminum to net nearly 450lbs of weight loss.

While the power numbers for the 3.0 Duramax I6 have yet to be released, that’s what everyone is most interested in. The Trailboss Duramax combo should prove to be a formidable full-size truck in the off-road segment.
