Falken Wildpeak AT3w – 1,000 Miles

Recently we strapped on the Falken Wildpeak AT3w All-Terrain tires on our 2017 RAM Power Wagon in the new 37×12.50R17 flavor, in favor of our summer meats which were the 37×13.50R20 Falken Wildpeak MT01 Max-Traction tires mounted on 20×9.5 Trail Ready HD Beadlocks.

First impressions are how much lighter they are compared to the previous combo we have been running. We mounted the AT3w’s to AEV 17×10 Katla aluminum wheels. These are traditional beaded rims, and are considerably lighter than the deadlocks just by the nature of robust build on the Trail Readys. The AEV/AT3w combo measures in a full 26lbs lighter per set than the MT/Beadlock combo and we can feel it while driving. Thanks to dropping 104lbs of rotational, unsprung mass off the driveline, acceleration and braking is improved dramatically. Additionally, the weight loss, along with the narrower tread and improved rolling resistance of the AT tread pattern vs the MT lugs, have also netted us a improvement of two miles per gallon on the highway. Intercity stop and go has remained unchanged due to just how heavy the truck is to begin with (7500lbs at current configuration)

Next up is noise. A massive improvement over the MTs, these Falken wildpeak AT3w tires are quiet quiet quiet. Previously time spent on a road trip with the MT’s meant that they were all you heard on the highway. Making the noise go away was simply an exercise of turning the volume of the radio up. Now, with the AT3w’s, wind noise against the windscreen is the biggest distraction while driving at speed.

All in all, at a thousand road miles – we are incredibly pleased with this new offering from Falken and can’t wait to put thousands more miles on them grinning ear to ear. Next time we will discuss off-road performance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do aggressive upper sidewalls contribute to the tyre’s off-road capabilities?

How Aggressive Upper Sidewalls Enhance Off-Road Performance

Aggressive upper sidewalls are a key feature that significantly boosts a tyre’s prowess in off-road environments. Here’s how they make a difference:

  • Enhanced Protection:These reinforced sidewalls guard against punctures and abrasions from sharp rocks and other rough terrain, ensuring your tyre remains intact during challenging off-road adventures.
  • Improved Traction:The additional grip provided by these sidewalls comes into play, especially when driving at low tyre pressures. This is crucial for maintaining control on loose surfaces or in situations where maintaining a stable line is essential.
  • Offset Shoulder Blocks:Built into the sidewalls, these blocks increase stability in off-camber situations, where uneven ground might otherwise lead to slippage or imbalance.

In essence, aggressive upper sidewalls equip tyres with the robust durability and extra grip needed to tackle tough trails, making any off-road journey a smoother and safer experience.

How does the optimised tread design and silica tread compound improve tyre performance?

How Does the Optimised Tread Design and Silica Compound Enhance Tyre Performance?

The optimized tread design and silica tread compound work together to significantly elevate tyre performance across various conditions.

  1. Longevity and Durability
  • Optimized Tread Design: This intentional design reduces uneven wear, extending the lifespan of the tyre.
  • Silica Compound: Enhances flexibility, enabling the tyre to maintain integrity over time, even on rugged terrains.
  1. Superior Winter Handling
  • Enhanced Grip: The combination ensures strong traction on snow and icy surfaces, minimizing slippage.
  • Temperature Resistance: The silica compound remains pliable in low temperatures, improving control.
  1. Wet Performance
  • Exceptional Water Dispersion: The tread pattern channels water away quickly, reducing the risk of hydroplaning.
  • Improved Surface Contact: The silica in the compound maintains consistent grip, enhancing safety during wet conditions.

This dynamic duo of design and material truly refines the tyre’s functionality, making it a reliable choice for diverse driving environments.

What is the purpose of rugged and rigid tread blocks in the tyre design?

Understanding the Purpose of Rugged and Rigid Tread Blocks in Tire Design

Rugged and rigid tread blocks serve a crucial role in tire engineering, enhancing overall performance and safety. Here’s why they are essential:

  • Enhanced Stability and Handling: These tread blocks are crafted with structural features like support ramps and step-down designs. This architecture increases the rigidity of the tire where it meets the road, providing better vehicle stability and more precise handling. This is particularly important when navigating sharp turns or uneven surfaces.
  • Stone Ejection: One significant advantage of these tread blocks is their ability to prevent stones and debris from embedding within the grooves. This not only extends the tire’s lifespan by minimizing potential damage but also ensures that the vehicle maintains optimal traction, crucial for safe driving in various conditions.

In essence, rugged and rigid tread blocks contribute to a tire’s durability, performance, and safety, making them a vital component in modern tire technology.

What certification does the tyre have for severe snow conditions?

The tyre is certified for extreme snow conditions with the Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake (3PMSF) symbol. This certification is provided by the Rubber Manufacturers Association, demonstrating the tyre’s ability to perform effectively in severe winter weather.
